Naming a Character

Names are important. They tell you a bit about a person before ever you know them.

Some names create a feeling of sweetness inside you. Others make you curious. Some are strong and bold.

Yet one thing I know about names. They come to mean something. A person's name becomes what they are.

If you are quiet, when people hear your name, they think of peace.

If you are outgoing, when others hear your name, they imagine laughter.

And yet there are other times when the following is true.

This makes me sad. It is so hard to believe that in so many people, this is true. To be honest, in a way, this is very true for me. (But you don't know my story, so how will you believe me? :D )

A good name is crucial.

A name with feeling and passion.

A name with meaning.

Roll it on you tongue. Speak it aloud. Test it. Try it. Feel it.

I love names, so much.

Particularly different names, (like my own).

But choose a name that speaks to you. Something you can imagine the character you want to develop standing behind.

Personal, up-close, and real.

Names are the backdrop of your creation.

This made me laugh....

On a deeper note, please pray for a friend of mine who lost a finger in a tractor accident yesterday. It is his left ring finger. He also broke his little finger. He is home from the hospital now and is doing better. The doctors were able to reconstruct half of the finger. Still, it is going to take him some time to learn how to do things now, particularly play his viola (he can use his little finger once it heals). We are all thanking God that this is all that happened, because it could have been so much worse. Farm equipment is dangerous.

All prayers appreciated and welcome.

Thanks everyone!

    1. Thanks! ME TOO!!!! :D
Really! What are they? (I know three of them...but the fourth...I can't figure out.)
You can just tell people the ones you prefer to go by. And the internet ones you can take care of yourself!!!! :D LOL, here I am giving advice, and I don't even have one nickname, lol!

  3. I know! Aren't names awesome?! I love writing fantasy primarily for the reason of making up awesome names that fit the characters (also... I don't have to do much research when I'm writing something out of my own mind. :)

and yes, I will keep your friend in my prayers.

    God bless!

    1. Yes, yes, yes!!!! I am beginning to enjoy that myself!!!! Although, in historical fiction, you can do it too, if you choose to right about a littleknown and very ancient time period!!!

Many thanks. He is doing much better.
      You too!!! :D

  4. I love naming characters. I sometimes get impatient waiting to find just the right name, but it's always worth it.
Love the pic! That is so me, and so my friends.
Last I heard, our mutual friend was doing very well, both physically and spiritually.

    1. I totally agree. Sometimes I have written whole idea's with no name cause I wanted just the right one. And then here comes my character marching down the lane saying, "Here I am and this is my name!!!!"
      I love that.
Yes, I talked to his sister a bit ago and he is doing very well!!!!

  5. Names are cool. But annoying (for me!). Either my character comes up with an awesome name on his own or we have to argue about it for days. Weeks. Months... And they all end up being last names. mime keeps saying "Why are you writing characters with last names as first names?" Sigh. Why is an incredibly good question. ;)

    Loved this post!!

    1. LOL!!!! (I can help there. If there is anything I know, it's names. Don't ask about much else.) LOL!!!!!! Poor characters. Here they come up to you, all cheery-like, and you don't like their names! (=
Why is always a good question, if you are asking me. hehe....

  6. HE PLAYS VIOLA?!! So do I. There's this thing called "The Extremely Extraordinary Bond of Viola Sister/Brotherhood" where we gang up on the shrill, squeaky violinists. Violists are great––friends for life. I will definitely pray for him (and no, not just because he's a violist ;).

On the topic of names... Yup. VERY important. Billy and Bonnie just don't cut it for me. {Sorry, Brian Davis, but I could never quite stomach those, even back in elementary school}.
If I write a story over a period of years, the names almost always change. The character seems to evolve with me and becomes someone quite outside of the person they once were.

    1. Yeah, and he is very good at it. He was in the most advanced orchestra in our group. Haha, that is funny.

I KNOW!!!! Sally, Sue, Bob, John.... :P

I have had quite a few characters change names over the years myself. Their old names just didn't fit.

That bit about the wanting to meet a fictional character made me laugh SO hard because I totally know the feeling. hehe.
Oh my gosh! That's so awful! I will pray. :(

I'm sincerely wondering if you are going to comment. Given you just read that blog post (or maybe skim read, at best, or maybe you've just skipped to the bottom). But, either way, whether you read it or not, NOW you have no doubt that I am crazy, are wondering if I am worthy of your time, and if it even matters that you say something. BUT, it does!!! Drop me a line! Can't tell you I will always respond coherently, but I WILL respond! And the comments... Well, they rather make my days. <3
